which is better for catalog retrieval?

1) stateless session bean + DAO
2) entity bean
My choice is 1) since no update operation involved.

It is a known "best practice" to use Stateless Session Bean for read-only data retrieval. Its even better to use it with a DAO.
Entity beans are mainly for concurrent updates of data.

why not servlet + DAO? actually this combination is the architecture for my previous project:
1) sevlet + DAO for query operation
2) entity bean for update operation
I see no reason for slsb here.

Well , servlet is good when you don't want the burden of App.Server involved. Stateless Session Beans are more scalable - reside in memory and all. The are better in high-volume applications.
