I barely passed part I (70%) but did fine on parts II/III (89%). When I first got the score report back on the CertManager website, it was listed as 89 F, as in Failed! Fortunately this was a typo, though a scary one. I thought that I had somehow bailed on part III, though the Study Guide said it was really only to make sure I was the same person who did the project.

I used Poseidon to do my UML, taking screen shots of the diagrams as I finished each one. The "community" version is a bit shaky, so save often! My UML diagrams were modeled very closely on the ones from the Study Guide, book #1 below.

Here are the books I read before the exam, in order of decreasing helpfulness (#1: most helpful).

1. Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for J2EE Technology Study Guide

2. Bitter EJB (I didn't read this til after, would have done much better if I had read it earlier!)

3. UML Distilled

4. Design Patterns

5. Enterprise JavaBeans (Bitter is less specific, but much more readable)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0596002262/qid=1086725322/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-4744027-8403142?v=glance&s=books

6. Core J2EE Patterns

7. Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture (this is probably my favorite technical book, but it's not that helpful for the exam)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321127420/qid=1086725367/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-4744027-8403142

8. Pattern Hatching

Well, as I said in my first post, it was the most important book for me. I bet some of the newed cert guides are better for part I though. When I started studying, it was the only one out there.
