Hi all,
Now I have a doubt about the requirement of SCEA Part 2,assignment said that the travel agent is written in COBOL and access IMS database through 3270 terminal, now FBN will add a web site for booking airfare, but the requirement said that The IMS database will be replaced with a relational database like Oracle, Sybase or Informix, but current travel agent visit IMS database through 3270 terminal,I dont know the difference between IMS database and Oracle. need I modify travel agent for accessing Oracle,Sybase or Informix? If so the assignment dont give me enough material. if not so,may travel agent visit Oracle through 3270 terminal? assignment give a Use Case Diagram, I find that there is a travel agent actor,I feel the web site the requirement needs should visite Oracle database,I dont understand why travel agent exist in Use Case Diagram?
please help me,Thanks.

You may want to have another look at the background requirements, paying close attention to any mention of your mystery actors.

James,
Are you thinking at too low a level? Think about how connectors can help.

Dave,
I think the requirement is very importment, the use case diagram is a key part of system analysis, but use case diagram is composized of actor and use case, I feel that it is importment to find all actors.

Ramon,
Now I am thinking how connectors, but I feel use case diagram is a key part,so use case diagram is created first, but I dont know why there is a travel agent actor in use case diagram given in assignment. I think that this should be an actor of exist system, and not the new booking airfare system.

Ip,
I think that it should not be replaced, because assigment doc said this point.

Are we are starting to tread slightly unsafe ground here guys?Check this thread for guidelines on acceptable discussion.

To clarify my earlier point (without discussing details) all actors in the use cases are also discussed in the requirements. If you are not sure which elements of the existing system you are expected to re-design then read the requirements again. They may not spell it out in bold but all the information you need is there. I don't think there is much more I can say on this.

As an aside, if two types of actor perform the same function this does not necessarily mean that one architectural solution will suit both groups. We should provide solutions that also consider factors such as physical and network topology and service level requirements like availability and response times.

Hope this helps.

Dave Patterson.

James,
Have a look at Cades case study. The book is a free download on various sites. It will help you see how to get the right diagrams from use cases.
