Jude Users : Sequence diagram question

I am using Jude to create my seq diagrams and I have a question :

If I want to create a message, with the text like 'send request to get flight' instead of 'getFlight()', how do i go about it? The problem I am facing is that Jude, by default, adds the function bracket () after every message text. Somehow putting a note icon on top of a message arrow doesnt sound good. Comparatively, Rose allows you to type free form text (without adding the () at the end), but , Rose isnt the best tool for creating seq diagrams.

Any suggestions would be helpful...

Thanks,
Parag

Parag,

Unfortunately I can't help you with Jude, but if things get too complicated and you need a free, flexible tool, you might want to try Dia.

Tomi,
Thanks for your help, as usual Actually, I figured out how to do it in Jude. I might look at Dia for my class diagram. Jude doesnt allow me to add (...) in attribute section of class diagram. Is it possible to do so in Dia?

Thanks,
Parag

Parag,

I'm glad if I helped. Yes, you can add "..." attribute in a Dia class. And if existing UML elements don't fit, you can always freely add boxes, lines and text with Dia.

Hi Tomi,

Is DIA good enough for our purpose? Does it have good export function as well? How about component diagrams?
I am curently using Jude but from postings here it seems I may have to change it.

Parag, you can do that in Jude too. Click on the sequence diagram but do not point the mouse to any specific components (object, arrows). On the left side, you will see three checked boxes. Simply uncheck the "Message Parameter Initial Visibility". Only the subsequent arrows will take effect.

HTH.

Dia is good enough for me, but I haven't passed yet . Export function has some bugs, but I think all the tools I tried have. Anyway, exporting seems good enough, Dia supports many formats.

How about component diagrams?

With Dia I can model a component inside a component by using just "ordinary" boxes. This is somehow impossible with most of tools, although it's shown in UML standard.

If you have problems with your current tool and haven't drawn all the diagrams, I recommend trying Dia. But I think every modeller has his/her own favourite and there's no perfect tool for everyone.

Tomi,
Might sound like a dumb question. Does Dia work on windows?

Yep. Just try it, won't take long to check the features. Dia is just a simple drawing tool with some UML support.
