Hi All,

I have been seriously thinking of taking some Java Certification exam. I am very interested in developing enterprise applications using EJB and other J2EE technologies. So then taking SCEA certification would be the way to go.

But my dilemma is, not having any certifications before, should I take SCJP 1.4 certification first and then aim for SCEA or can I jump into taking SCEA directly. Because I am of the opinion that to be a good architect, you first need to be a good programmer and Java programming language is so vast that even though I have been working on Java for the past 2 yrs, there are so many things about the language I don't know because I don't need to use them in my work. But contrary to that, I have also read in a bunch of places that taking SCJP certification doesn't necessarily make you a good programmer either.

So my question is, would me knowing Java programming language inside out (i.e. taking programmer cert) make a difference in my preparation for enterprise architect certification.

Please advice.

Thanks,
Shweta

The easy answer is that you can jump right into your SCEA certification if you so wish. There's no prerequisite to taking the exam.

Would SCJP help you with this exam? That I don't know (and would tend towards 'no' on), as it deals more with the Enterprise side of matters. I think having a good, solid basis in J2EE would probably be more of a help, and as such, passing SCJP as a stepping-stone to SCBCD might be more what you're thinking of, in light of your logic.

Thanks Theodore, for sharing your views with me. I think I know what I want to do. I'll take the SCJP, SCBCD path.

SCJP doesnt help in anyway for SCEA.
SCJP is def a good test to see if you know the basics of the language.
Though I took all the sun certs and ibm cert enterprise developer at the end of it, I felt I should have taken just one exam, SCEA or IBM Cert Enterprise dev.
my 2 cents.

Shweta,

Everyone's got their own opinion
SCEA straightay is a good idea and infact it covers most of the topics which are needed to make a good architect and also is recognized good in industry. But the pitfall is after you are SCEA,that much level is expected from ur side. Now i understand taht you have some 2 odd years of experience,so the best way forward is SCJP SCWCD SCBCD SCEA/UML from IBM

THis is the second path you should take.Am being biased about this since ive been taking the same path.
Not only you get refreshed about the core stuff but also gives u immense satistaction at your achievement.

So Shweta SCJP SCWCD SCBCD is the path...take the plunge
