Core Pattern Design or HFDP is more suitable for preparing the exam?

HFDP book is more suitable for the first part of the exam you can use it along with the Cade book to prepare for the first part of exam.
Core J2EE Patterns book is a must for the second part of the exam. Without it, you will not be able to draw a good component diagram. You want to go through it in detail before attempting the component diagram.
I forgot to mention: I have both the books and they both are excellent. Just different focus. I would recommend owning both.
Hope this helps.
