Hi,

I've heard that there will be a second edition of Mark Cade's Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for J2EE Technology Study Guide (2nd Edition) coming in October 2005.

Does anyone has more details on it, especially whether all SCEA exam objectives are covered (not in detail, but at least talking about them )?

And are there any excerpts of this 2nd edition book available?

Any hints are welcome

Regards,
Darya

Reality is he is probably just updating it for newer exams. The original book was published several years ago. Of course, I have zero knowledge that that is the case, and without hearing from the author, the publisher, or someone who knows either, you probably won't get much of an answer. Telling people to wait to buy the next version hurts sales of the original version.

The real question is when will Sun update the exams (SCEA, SCBCD) to reflect EJB 3.0 and the newer specs.

Hi Chris,

your are right about the sales of the current version. Nevertheless my disappointment would enormously rise when I buy the current version of the book yet and see the next version published in a month after my purchase.

Bert Bates recently hinted in this thread that we shouldn't expect anything soon for the SCBCD exam (which I'm currently preparing for).

originally posted by Bert Bates:

The SCBCD exam will not be updated anytime soon, I'd say 9 months at the earliest, but if I had to bet I'd say more like 12-15

I don't know what this says about SCEA, but the fact that SCBCD is working with EJB 2.0 (or J2EE 1.3) and SCEA even with EJB 1.1 (or J2EE 1.2) is not speaking for an update in SCEA soon and is confusing me.

I wonder with what 2nd edition Mark Cade will come up when there is no new SCEA exam in sight . I can think of an great update of his previous edition because I read a comment from Ajith Kallambella at Amazon.com about the 1st edition where Ajith Kallambella says:

originally posted at Amazon.com
...
In summary, they badly need to fill some gaping holes, and to the extent possible, work towards completeness

So for me a 2nd version make sense. Nevertheless I can't find any more information and it would be great for some more insights form your all side because I plan to start with SCEA in October 2005 .

Darya

We are still working on the update for the test so the 2nd edition of the book will not be out until the test. I would not expect the test update until Jan 2006.

Hi Mark,

thanks for your response. I really appreciate to have you here . But can you clarify what you mean by test .

Do you mean with test, the test of maybe the 2nd book edition code example or do you mean with test, the test for a new SCEA exam?

Any clarification is welcome.

Regards,
Darya

The next revision of the exam will probably not be out until January 2006, so I would recommend getting the test done instead of waiting.

Is the new exam for J2EE 1.4 or JEE 5.0?
Thank You

Thanks Mark .

I think that are interesting news for lots of people

However for me it works out that I will go for the 1st edition book despite the remarks from Ajith Kallambella.

I take your recommendation serious and place my purchase order right now for the 1st edition.

Darya

Hi all,

that were surprising news from Mark Cade which confused me a little, but only little . Following his recommendation to do the exam instead of waiting for the next update sounds also OK to me.

Being a good architect doesn't really depend on the J2EE version

What I expect from the SCEA Study Guide is that it shows me what I have to expect from SCEA or how SCEA is shaped up at all.

I did my order for the SCEA Study Guide 1st edition, knowing that there is something new coming out. But as I said, to my opinion, it really doesn't deserve to wait for next exam update

Darya

If you like to view the 1st edition online you can do so at Safari Bookshelf .

You have to register with your credit card and cancel between 14 days without being charged.

In general terms you are correct. However, I would find a J2EE 1.4 version more valuable because it would probably also outline:
  • appropriate use of local and remote EJBs
  • when to use Web Services and XML
  • asynchronous use of EJBs
  • J2EE patterns in addition to GOF patterns
  • update for J2eeCA 1.5

  • ... well at least as far as J2EE orthodoxy goes.

An update to JEE 5.0 (which I don't think is likely with a January date) would also include EJB 3.0 - one would expect that that would change the playing field significantly.

The current list of resources under the SCEA links is great for the SCEA 1.1 prep - but I would be interested in is an updated list that gives you a fair shot in the case of an SCEA beta - in some cases the latest edition of the already listed materials might be enough but I expect that there will be more ground to cover. Your toolbox has gotten bigger - so I would expect some best practices to change.

    Hi Peer,

I don't think that it will be J2EE 1.5 simply because there seems to be a policy at Sun Education where it says:

originally from HF EJB p. 28
    ...
we don't want to certify folks on something that almost nobody is using. Certification is NOT about "I know the latest and greatest release". It's about I know the technology that people are using now. ..."

So most propably it will be an update for J2EE 1.4 .

I also can not share your concerns for an outdated SCEA exam, maybe your expectations are to high because you want web services been covered by SCEA. There are lots of web services out there and I don't think that everyone would need them all.

For me the point is to get the requirement specification and make the best architecture out of it. I remember from SCJD that this is the real challenge, to find out the patterns and build up the architecture. I had about 10 design patterns in my SCJD assignment solution and I'm sure that there will more patterns to come for the SCEA assignment.

Now let it be one pattern more or less because additional technologies are included in J2EE 1.4, I believe that once we get the idea how to play with J2EE and design that we are able to handle any new technology to come.

On the other hand waiting for a next update would put my whole schedule upside down. And who give us the guarantee that the update will really be til January 2006 .

    Regards,
    Darya

I agree that a J2EE 1.4 update is more likely. But that update has been on the cooker since end of 2002/beginning 2003 that I was beginning to wonder - knowing is better than guessing.

I also agree that Web services are over-hyped, but they are part of the tool box now - so it's time to learn apply them judiciously.

When is comes to Patterns, Scott Ambler said it well: "Apply Patterns Gently" (Agile Modeling, p.62). Patterns are a form of reuse and its valuable to know and recognize them but there is no point trying to shoehorn every problem into a pattern. But I still can't believe that you can get through the SCBCD without being exposed to the Session Facade pattern - which for obvious reasons isn't part of the SCEA 1.1 either.

Personally, I think that the use of EJB from version 1.1 to 2.1 has changed significantly, and that the progression will continue with EJB 3.0. The same requirements will most likely lead to architectures that differ in significant ways on the server side because each version has different strengths and weaknesses.

I did not imply that anybody should put off certification. Just check here. However I wanted to be prepared to participate in an SCEA beta if the opportunity should arise. I still have the SCBCD to complete - then I was going to move on to the SCDJWS. Should the SCEA update still be a cloud of vapor after that then SCEA 1.1 it is.

    Hi Peer,

I think with your schedule ahead for SCBCD and SCDJWS you are one of the new SCEA exam first candidates .

This was the first time that Mark Cade took a stand concerning the SCEA exam update, so that information should be now more than only rumors and I think that your chances are now really high.

    Good Luck ,
    Darya
