Hi All,

I have 3+ years of experience in developing applications using J2EE. I am in dilemma on whether to go for SCEA or SCJP 5.0, since I don't have any certifications at all, I would like to achieve one. Is is really appropriate to go for SCEA certification at this point of time?

Thanks & Regards,
Ganesh.

You must have to clear SCJP before taking any another sun exam. That is the prerequisite.

Ganesh,

SCEA focussing on the Architecting & Designing the applications.
Other exams for developing the application components.

My opinion is, it is right to time to start the SCEA preparation...

I did SCWCD but no SCJP. And guess what, they did not send me the Certificate. I'll get one only when I'll clear SCJP (I am too old for SCJP - so NO).

SCEA does not have such restriction. So if you wish to get SCEA, go ahead. But based on your experience level I'll suggest SCJP, SCWCD (and possibly SCBCD), before SCEA.

(Sudhaker - I don't think I've ever heard of anyone being 'too old' for the SCJP exam. Just thought the turn of a phrase was odd.)

I agree that it's likely better advice to try some of the other exams first, but it is entirely possible to go straight for SCEA if you feel you have the requisite knowledge in the Java EE space, which you might after three years working with it. The question, though, is more a matter of your experience with design of applications rather than development - as the SCEA exam is more targeted towards the UML design of an application rather than the nitty-gritty of the Java code needed to carry through such a thing.

Just another viewpoint.
