Which one of these two would you recommend for someone preparing for Part 1?

It's really a good one to go through.

i recomend the first too. and a read lot lot lot lot of links posted in this forum, for some topics are more usefull than a book.

Yes, both are good books. Remember to study details of protocols, like JRMP, IIOP etc. Also study details of argument-passing in many remote frameworks, like RMI and CORBA.

Another good book is the GoF. Be sure to fully understand all GoF patterns and their application in J2EE.

I strongly recommend that you buy the Whizlabs simulator.
