As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'd installed a new J2SE version, 1.3.1_02 in last few days, and I also started to see this bug. I suspected the plug-in. On Win2K, on the Internet Options dialog, Advanced tab, I deselected the "Use Java 2 v.1.3.1_02..." option and the problem went away. When I reselected the problem returned, etc. There must be some inconsistency between the MS VM and the plug-in to which the applet is sensitive.
Technically, this is just a work-around, and the problem will still need correcting.
