I think that when I sat down for it, it took me about two weeks to prepare, given my experience at the time (about 4 years in the Java EE space). The biggest hurdle I dealt with was trying to make sure that I knew the difference between the spec on Part I - J2EE 1.2 - and the version we were using in the office.

I took about two months preping for part 1, but I spent more time on security and some other topics than I needed. The Whizlabs simulator is very good judge on whether you are ready.
The biggest challenge is figuring out the version on the test UML 1.x, EJB 1.x, Applet security, etc.
The revised test is coming, but it will probably take months....
