Hi sanjay! Can you provide more info on how the upgrade exam for SCEA 5 works?

I currently have both SCEA Old Part I and SCEA 5 Beta Part I. And I'm planning on taking Parts II/III of the old exam (I already purchased the assignment and voucher) this year. Does this mean that if I passed Parts II/III, I will be certified in both SCEA Old and SCEA 5?

Thanks.

Hi,
The details of the exam can be found at

http://www.sun.com/training/catalog/courses/CX-310-053.xml

Prerequisites: Passed (CX-310-051/CX-310-300A,CX-310-052) i.e. should have passsed previous version of SCEA.

If you will pass Parts II/III of the old exam then you will be certified for old SCEA. You can then take the upgrade exam.

Thanks for this information.

However, I'm still a bit confused, isn't this upgrade exam very similar to SCEA 5 BETA Part I? (which I already took last October)

Hi Paul,

If you look at the topics covered in the exam they are all similar whether it is Beta , upgrade or the SCEA 5.

It is the exma your are taking.

So if you want to get certificate for SCEA5.0 then complete part II and III for SCEA 5 BETA as you have completed Part I for the Beta.

Else complete the old version of SCEA and take the upgrade.

I think there is some mistake on the following page
http://www.sun.com/training/catalog/courses/CX-310-053.xml

where it states Prerequisites: Passed (CX-310-051/CX-310-300A,CX-310-052)
but isn't CX-310-052 the step 1 of the new SCEA 5?
shouldn't the that be CX-310-061?

Anyway I have successfully registered for Sun Certified Enterprise Architect, Java, EE 5 Upgrade Exam(CX-310-053) too, I know it is probably very similar to step 1 of the beta so does anyone know where I can gather the study materials or information on the preparation for this exams since a lot of people have attempted the beta and passed it.
Thank you

Now I understand why Paul had confusions. I did not take notice of prerequisite CX-310-052. Yes, it should have been the third part of old SCEA

Hi Sanjay,
I also have old SCEA certification.
Can you tell me, what books/articles/practice exams you did to prepare for this upgrade exam?

you can't use parts 1 to 3 of the old scea with the new one and vise versa. if you pass the old scea you need to take the upgrade exam (which is very much like the part1 of scea5) to be both scea and scea5.

Yoo Hoooooooo I passed the upgrade exam

Ashish,
Well, I did not follow any thing specific for 5. Just brushed up what ever I had prepared for old SCEA and just skimmed about EJB3.0

Congratulations sanjay!

Anyway, regarding my query, and slightly disregarding all the technicalities you mentioned above.

I guess the bottom line would be this, why would I want to take the

SCEA 5 Upgrade Exam

# CX-310-053 $100.00
# Number of questions: 48
# Pass score: 70% (29 of 48 questions)
# Time limit: 120 minutes

when I already passed

SCEA 5 Part I?

# CX-310-052 $200.00
# Number of questions: 64
# Pass score: 57% (37 out of 64 questions)
# Time limit: 120 minutes

By simply comparing the passing scores, it looks like SCEA 5 Part I is even harder than the SCEA 5 Upgrade Exam. The exam objectives look very identical also.

So I'm hoping SUN would reconsider this situation in the event that I would be able to complete Parts II and III of the old SCEA.
