I am in the process of studying for the old SCEA part I exam. I've encountered some information on Front Controller in the mock exams. Can anyone explain what I need to know about Front Controllers??? I'm not even sure of which objective this question would be a part of since it's not one of the GOF patterns.

You're looking at one of the standard J2EE design patterns. It's described here on Sun's site:

Front Controller - J2EE Design Pattern

Use a controller as the initial point of contact for handling a request. The controller manages the handling of the request, including invoking security services such as authentication and authorization, delegating business processing, managing the choice of an appropriate view, handling errors, and managing the selection of content creation strategies.

You really should pick up the book Design Patterns. Every pattern in this book is covered on the exam:

Core J2EE Design Patterns for the SCEA5 Exam
