When should EJB container remove the EJB instances?

An enterprise app with many stateless session beans and entity beans was running on the WebSphere App server. After hundreds of concurrent user requests had been handled, the system was running idly for several hours. Should the EJB container have removed all the pooled SLSBs and Entity Beans? Looking at the heap dumps, many app objects were still in both EJB container and Web container. Is that correct or not?

I think that falls under the discretion of the app server; the specification does not state it one way or the other.
