Just noticed a new brand "Author". Check out the this week's "Author",
http://www.coderanch.com/t/200391/JNLP-Web-Start/java/Volounteering-JNLP-server-project
So what about the sheriff's/bartenders who are authors too? Does the "Author" title apply to only book-promoting authors?

I believe its a special distiction for authors visiting to promote their books only. Previously they displayed as 'greenhorns', which was a little misleading.
We looked at having a 'Trouble-maker' title too, but decided to make him a Bartender instead

Does that mean if the book promotion week is over, the "Author" turns to "Greenhorn" or "ranchhand"?

On an afterthought, wonder how many authors decided to stick around even after the book promotion is over?

Since when did 'Author' equate to 'Gifted'

Not many. Most of our authors either decided to stick around here well before they wrote books, or they wrote books before they came to JavaRanch, but they came here independant of any organized JavaRanch book promotion (since that's a relatively recent thing in JavaRanch history). Offhand, I'm not sure if any of the regulars listed came here specifically as a result of a Ranch promotion, but I may well be mistaken.
Regardless, as pointed out in other posts, quite a few authors are hanging out here now, and we're very happy to have them. Well, most of them.

Thank you, James
Is it right to say "my best enemy", or should I say "my worst enemy"?

Depends what you mean. "Worst enemy" is the standard, boring way to say it, while "best enemy" is a Mapraputism I've always been fond of, with a slightly different connotation. You could also go with "archenemy" if you like.

I don't think "Author" holds (or should hold) any particular distinction here. Every once in a while I get the occasional reverential feedback on a response I post, and while it is flattering, I worry that it detracts from the value of a correct answer. I mean, shoot, even if David O' Meara says something correct, the thanks should be no less vigorous.
I would have preferred 'Visiting Author" for this title but I'm sure reasons against were clear on the point -- I didn't pay much attention myself to that whole issue.

Where would Batman be without the Joker? Where would Superman be without Lex Luthor? All the great super heroes need an enemy that is truly special. So why not "best enemy?"

In the dredging up old threads department...
I wanted to mention that I noticed that Ted Husted, the author of Manning's recentStruts in Action: Building Web Applications with the Leading Java Framework has joined us recently, already lending his ample knowledge to the Java Frameworks Forum. Anybody who has subscribed to the Struts-User mailing list or viewed his amazingly useful About Struts site knows that Ted is an authority on all that is Struts. I for one look forward to his participation in the Frameworks forum.

Rick Hightower and Eric Hatcher have been pretty active after their book giveaways.

Also, Sam Dalton and Dan Jepp have both been active in the SCWCD forum recently. Granted it was initially to promote their new book but I've since seen both of them in other threads too answering questions.

That's a revelation! I thought Cindy, Mapraputa and Ajith (with such a different ethnic origins) agreed at Javaranch to compile their's posts into a book...
So, it is vice versa, they wrote a book and then started posting in Javaranch... and now do not have any more spare time for more books because of it?

No. While they were at JavaRanch they wrote a book but it was not a compilation of their posts here.

Is Javaranch moving up in the world? It's a good site along with the Sun Java site, IMHO.
