On Page 156 of Head First EJB, where it discusses LocalBeans, LocalHome and LocalEJBObject, are only serialized arguments allowed to the Bean Methods or can we have any type of arguments.

RMI/IIOP rules do not apply to local component and home interfaces, only to remote component and home interfaces. You aren't limited in local interfaces *unless* you intend to expose the same method through both remote and local interfaces.
