Not having practical experience won't have a negative impact for sure. I can say this because I started off the same way not a very long time ago.
There are a whole lot of concepts - not to mention the classes and interfaces, their methods - that you have to deal with. So it makes sense to actually practice writing sample beans, even as you progress with your reading.
As for the study material, for exam or otherwise, I believe the Head First EJB is a good start because it presents the dry and vast concepts quite interestingly without your losing grip. For online resources, you may want to visit the SCBCD links displayed on this forum. Ed Roman's Mastering EJB is good too, though as a beginner I found it quite went over my head.
