To the best of my knowledge the ranch runs on flat files, not a DB. I'm not sure what the specific reason is for posts being lost, but it happens.

There is a topic in the JavaRanch forum for discussing items like JavaRanch (which may be why the forum is called "JavaRanch" and not "EJB Certification (SCBCD)" ). It is generally a good idea to check in the JavaRanch forum from time to time (especially after experiencing a problem) as that is where all general announcements are made.

For what its worth, if software caches messages in memory, and the server crashes, then messages will be lost (note the "if" there - I have not tried to read the source code to find out if this is the case for UBB).

Likewise if the hard drive crashed, then data will be lost - this site is not a commercial site, and so far nobody has volunteered to purchase a RAID system (yes - you could be the first to offer ).

Please continue any further discussions in "Saloon Server went down June 3, 2005. Posts lost".

Regards, Andrew
