Should a a CMP entity bean class must... be abstract???

Yes the class should be abstract becaus the container will provied the actual class that will have the implementation of your accessor methods. The abstract getters and setters that you provide in the entity bean class will be implemented by the container and also the ejbSelect() mentods.
