How long until EJB 3.0?

I have just passed my SCJP exam, and was thinking about starting for the SCBCD, but I'm concerned that it will quickly become obsolete once EJB 3.0 comes out. Should I just wait a while and perhaps concentrate on SCWCD in the meantime?

I would (hope) that any skills learned from the current EJB 2.1 spec will still be relevant in 6 months /

You may be waiting for a long time

The following sequence of events has to occur
  • The spec has to be finalized.
  • A certification exam test bank has to be developed.
  • A good exam-prep guide has to be published.

  • I haven't done the research, but I think first point to last was/will be approximately 12 months for SCJP 1.5/5.0. The spec for EJB 3.0 hasn't been finalized yet so it could be 12-24 months before you are in the position to become EJB 3.0 certified. (You can skip the last point but it will be considerably more work).

And just because you are 3.0 certified doesn't necessarily you'll get to use it, you may be stuck using 2.0, 2.1 or worse yet Spring and Hibernate .

So if you have the time and energy now - do it now.
I chose to do SCWCD before SCBCD simply to follow the progression of the technology; first there was Java, then there were Servlets, then there were EJBs, and finally there were web services.

Thanks for the info Peer! I'll keep going with the SCWCD study, seeing as I've started it now.

My Head First EJB book arrived yesterday, but I've just spotted it's aimed towards EJB 2.0, it's the 2003 first edition of the book. Is this too old?

No, SCBCD was never updated to EJB 2.1 - so that is the book. Most people like it, however some people find the HF style "distracting". If you belong to that group then SCBCD Exam Study Kit: Java Business Component Developer Certification for EJB is an alternative or complementary book.
Don't forget to grab the EJB 2.0 Spec.

Well, HF Servlets & JSP (or "HF SCWCD" as it is titled now) is the way to go on that one. You should get these anyway:
  • Servlet API 2.4 Spec
  • JSP 2.0 Spec
  • Standard Tag Library Spec
