Question on Mastering EJB book

Hi All,

I am new to this forum. Recently, I finished my SCWCD exam and thinking of taking SCBCD exam in near future.

I bought "Mastering Enterprise Java Beans" by Ed Roman three years back, which covers EJB 1.0. As the exam is for EJB 2.0, can I still use the old book to learn EJB concepts (which are common to both versions) or should I buy the second version? Is there a major change between 1.0 and 2.0?

BTW, I don't have EJB experience and I would like to know howlong it may take to prepare for the exam, for a person who is completely new to EJB?

If I buy HFEJB book now, can I get through the exam (by reading it in combination with Mastering EJB)?

hi there. i currently starting my reading on EJB using pdf file free downloaded in website. The book is by Ed Roman and other 2 authors. It is 3rd edition.

what's your edition? i think 3rd edition covering EJB 2.0 above....but i haven't read deep yet...

i haven't go for SCWCD test, but starting to read EJB. if you want the pdf file "Mastering EJB" by Ed Roman, then i can send to you. cos i get it free. hoho....

hm...usually people will use HEEJB...why not you give a try on different way that they did? i tried to buy the HFEJB today, but the book is empty already. guess many ppl studying it...hoho....

The server side has the 2nd and 3rd edition of "Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans" as a PDF. As the SCBCD pertains to EJB 2.0 you should work with the 2nd edition - if you choose to work with the 3rd edition ignore service endpoint interfaces and MDB content that relates to messaging systems other than JMS.

Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans 2e (EJB 2.0)

Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans 3e (EJB 2.1)

Also get a copy of the EJB 2.0 specifications.

HFEJB + the EJB 2.0 specifications for reference should see through the exam. But its probably a good idea to have another reference around for a third opinion in case HFEJB coverage is too thin while the specifications are too dense or terse - but ultimately what the specifcations say is (Bean) Law.

Thanks for your reply. I have already downloaded the .pdf of 3rd Edition.

As it's difficult to read an entire book on computer, I prefer printed books.

exactly. If go for the exam only, then EJB 2.0 is the right one.

if want upgrade yourself, EJB 2.1 is also not a bad choice.

but i guess i downloaded the wrong edition haha...

How quickly do you pick things up? What other background knowledge do you have? It varies wildly from person to person. In general I'd say 3-6+ weeks full-time or 3+ months part-time (2-4 hours, 5 times a week); it will take longer the longer you take, as you are going to have review material you started out with in more depth, as you probably have forgotten about it already. No guarantees.
