Hi Michael,

Unfortunately, the HF books are not available in PDF format because of the huge amount of graphical content.

Graphical content is not a big deal. The real reasons are from the fear of illegal digital copies and losing profit of publishers.

That's what I initially thought - however that doesn't jive with Tim O'Reilly's position stated in: Piracy is Progressive Taxation, and Other Thoughts on the Evolution of Online Distribution.
Of course he may have changed his tune as O'Reilly is now publishing Software Piracy Exposed : "For every $2 worth of software purchased legally, $1 worth of software is pirated illegally."
However, I suspect the fact that eBooks compete directly with their Safari on-line service has got more to do with it: O'Reilly's E-Book Strategy.

Hi Guys,

Since the tech bubble burst a few years back, computer book publishing has been a lean game for publishers and authors alike. We have been incredibly fortunate to have five bestselling Java books in the last several years, but all of their sales combined don't match the sales of the original RHE book which was written back during the bubble
So, there's not a lot of fat left to allow for tons of piracy - but Kathy and I continue to do research to find a way to provide eBooks that's fair for everyone - we welcome any ideas you might have
