I used the JBoss app server along with the eclipse IDE for preparation for the exam. Everything worked well, and it also gave me a little more practice on the deployment descriptor elements as you have to know what annotations to use in the javadoc to allow XDoclet to generate the DD for you. I strongly suggest this approach. Sure JBoss wizards will put in all the required methods for you in a "code goes here" template, but there's nothing to stop you from creating an EJB from a standard class and working from scratch.

Something to be aware of: You'll have to look at the documentation to correctly obtain an InitialContext from the JNDI ENC. Also, For working with entity beans, I set up a MySql database to use. You'll have to look at the documentation to set that up if you want to go that route as well. It's a little more work to configure, but this is what you'll really do in the real world.
