I am after a bit of advice really, about what exam to take.

I am unsure whether to take the Java 2/EE 1.3 exam (CX-310-090) or the Java/EE 5 exam (CX-310-091).

The company I work for has a system that is built on the Java 2/EE 1.3 technology, and I will be part of a team responsible for supporting this system for the next few years at least. So this exam seems to be more relevant when compared with my work responsiblities.

But I have read on the Sun sites that this exam appears to be discontinued within the next couple of months that suggests this qualification is becoming dated?

Having looked at the EE 5 version, it doesn't seem to be as relevant to me, and it also states that it is aimed at advanced developers that have extensive job-role experience, which is not how I would describe myself.

Also, on the Sun site it says that you need to use your voucher to take the CX-310-090 exam by 30th April 2008, does this then mean there is no way of taking this exam after that date? This only gives me about 11 weeks to prepare and take this exam, which is a little tight.

I am a little confused as to what to do? Any advice much appreciated.

Well, I will do SCBCD 1.3 test, because I bought this voucher many months ago, and I also studied by Head First EJB, which covers EJB 1.3.

I think that if you are starting studying now, SCBCD 5.0 would be preferable, but be sure that when you get this certification, a new one is going to be offered.

For example, we have now SCJP 6.0, SCWCD 5.0 and SCEA 5. Technology changes really fast...

I think if I were you, I would try to somehow squeeze whatever I can get in in the 11 weeks time and take the old exam, since you are saying that you will be using the technology for at least the next few years. I am sure you can pass the exam and get some concepts in, assuming you spend at least 3 hours/day for the next 11 weeks. I would use just HFEJB plus specs.

Of course, if money is not a constraint, I would also take the new exam at a later date just for kicks.
