About callbacks, you could think that there may be threading issues for a callback called by many beans. But the container serializes method calls, meaning that method calls are queued. Nothing to do with the Serializable interface

It also says that if the same or different client uses the same stateful session bean, and that a business method is concurrently called, a ConcurrentAccessException may be thrown.

When it talks about serializable, I think it just means the request are queued up, and are handled one at a time, rather than in a parallel or threaded manner. As was said, I don't think it is referring to Java object serialization, as pertains the Serializable interface.
