What's the difference (if any) between class attribute and beanName attribute? I know that I am permitted to use beanName instead of class attribute but I don't know exactly why.

In what context are you asking this?
Like in a JSP useBean tag
Could you please clarify....

Have a look at the JSP spec (pp 67-73). One feature (see p.73) is that you can use a dynamic, request time expression for beanName.
