Is knowledge of Tomcat must or can you use any tool for testing your servlets and JSPs like JRun?

No it is not a must but it is free

Make sure whatever server you use, it supports Servlet Spec 2.3 and JSP Spec 1.2.

... and its very easy to set up. Especially if u user windows nt/2000/xp.
For the above, for windows 95/98/me and linux (both seems to be a little bit more complicated) you find references in old posts from this forum or from apache/tomcat forum.
