Hello all,
I've just passed my SCJP - 90% - and I'm now considering taking the SCWCD exam. I have a lot of experience with web development - ASP - but I have ZERO experience with JSP/Servlets/Beans, etc...
3 Questions I have:
1- Anybody knows if the objectives of the SCWCD exam are going to be changed soon? how soon? Ok I just read in another post that it might be due next March or so, will the change be MUCH? Or if I buy a book now, it will be still an enough start?
2- This book "Professional SCWCD Certification" by Daniel Jepp & Sam Dalton is due to come out this month. I was wondering if anybody had a chance to review the book. Considering that I have no experience at all with Java Web Development, is this book enough??
3- Everybody praises Hanumant's "SCWCD Exam Study Kit", is it that good? Does it really focus on what is really needed for the exam?
What would you suggest, 1st book or Second book??
Thanks in advance

If you have zero experience with jsp/servlets/beans, etc., you don't want to start with Hanumant's book. It's a great study guide for the exam, but I don't think it has enough basics to really learn the stuff.
Check out Wrox's Professional JSP 2nd edition (also covers servlets). It'll give you a pretty comprehensive basic knowledge, then hit Hanumant's book.

What about the book More Servlets and JSP by Marty Hall ? I am also new to Servlets, JSP; I'm beginning to prepare for this exam and thinking which ONE book to buy which will cover both Servlets and JSP for a beginner. Can you provide some suggestions ?
Thanks, Sudd

If you don't have any prior knowledge of JSP/servlet then Marty Halls "core servlet and Jsp" is really good book . It has lot of sample examples too. Also it is available on the net
Here is the link for the book:
http://www2.usermagnet.com/books/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
If you want the advance version of this book which covers almost all the objectives of exam then go for "More servlets and Jsp" by Marty hall.
This is not available on net. so You have to buy it.
These books are not exam oriented but gives good knowledge to beginners.

Thank you Trupti. Thanks for the link. I think I'll initially go for the online book and later Hanumant/Manning book, when I've understood the basics.

Hi Alfred & Everybody,
Just thought i'd let you know that I was one of the authors of the Wrox 'Professional SCWCD' Study Guide due out this month. I have my copy back from the printers so it should be in shops very soon.
Both myself and Sam (the other author), wrote this book with the intention of providing everything required to pass the exam. We decided on this approach as we found that there were so many different (and good) sources of info available that it would be good to pull it all together into a single text to make it easier for you guys!
We obtained all of our technical reviewers from this very forum some six months ago so rest assured it focusses on teching you everything you require to pass the exam. Also included at the end of every chapter is a quick reference summary sheet covering all the core fundamentals from the chapter.
The popular SCWCD test harness from WhizLabs is also included on a CD along with an examples web application and fully working case study.
I hope that you will find this new book provides you with everything you need to pass!
Thanks and good luck!
Dan

Thanks all for your replies, the link was really of much help too, and the reviews.
Dan I looked up the book on amazon, but there is no much info. about it. Is there any sample chapter? Is the book enough for those that has no experience with jsp, etc.? or should there be some other resources?

Hi Alfred,
Our book - Professional SCWCD certification' does assume a certain degree of knowledge about web applications (JSP,Servlets etc). If we were to go right back to basics then the book would be too large and experienced developers would be put off reading it.
I will try and find out if we can publish some sample chapters yet ( I believe we are awaiting an exact publish date)
Regards
Dan

I highly recommend Marty Hall's "More Servlets and JSP". Just go through the entire book and skip the chapters on Filters and the JSP Standard Tag Library. It's extremely well written and reemphasizes already stated points many times so that it gets to your head. Plus, as a bonus, you can use the book after you are done taking the exam. I've found a lot of the examples very useful.

Dan, Tha only chance I can get your book is that it comes out in few days, since a friend of mine is coming from the US byt the 16th of Dec. so he can bring it with him.
I don't think this book will ever reach Egypt.
Else I will have to get another book.
I'm now reading the PDF copy of core servelets and JSP which should give me enough background, then I guess your book will be good for preparing for the exam.
Please let me know when it's available in the stores and on amazon.com
regards
