I'm sure this has been asked/anwswered before, but does anyone know if this exam will be updated in the near future (i.e. with new J2EE 1.4 specs)? Even so, would I be foolish to take the current exam in the next couple of months? Thanks in advance. [ January 31, 2003: Message edited by: Kevin Impecoven ]
I'm also very interested in taking SCWCD as soon as possible. I don't want to start studying now, take the exam in (say) June-July, and then have it outdated in August! Does anyone know what typically happens when Sun updates an exam? Will the new one get a new version number (as in SCJP1.2 -> SCJP1.4)? Or will it be the same cert, just with slightly different content? Any advice from those in the know would be much appreciated. Thanks, Colin.
No matter which exam you take -- your Cert is valid for 2 years after you take the exam (whether its the SCPJ 1.2, SCPJ 1.4, current SCWCD or the next SCWCD exam). Just as when Sun updated from the SCPJ 1.2 to 1.4 exam -- there is first a BETA process where they test out all their questions. A few months after that the new exam is released and a few months after that they release an "upgrade" exam -- usually cheaper than the full exam and with less questions. Seeing as though they haven't announced the new exam yet (AND the fact that JSP 1.3 and Servlet 2.4 isn't even official yet) -- I can only assume the exam will be similar to the current one -- but will add some of the new features of the new specifications. My recommendation -- take the exam now, if you're ready for it -- especially if you say you want to take it as soon as possible -- I believe it takes Sun usually 3 months or so AFTER the beta process to release the new exam... which might put its release towards the end of this year.
Thanks for the advice Jessica Well I think I'll make a start by buying the SCWCD Exam Kit book. I would hope to be certified before the new version of the exam comes out, but even if I hit a snag hopefully the book will still be useful for the new exam. Thanks, Colin.
As far as I know Sun is not doing a beta of a new SCWCD exam right now, nor is there even a breath of rumor of one happening soon. They seem to be focussed on the new SCBCD (Business Component Developer aka EJBs) exam, with an update of the SCEA (which is truly moldy) also in progress. I wouldn't expect to see an SCWCD update until those two are well launched, especially given that the underlying specifications are not complete yet. I'm preparing for the current edition of the exam (will probably take it within 7 days) and expect to sit for the SCWCD update in perhaps a year's time. Jessica, Is the upgrade exam made available for an infinite period of time? For example, so long as someone has passed the prior version of the SCJP, they can take the upgrade whenever and pay the lesser amount to update their certification level? Or is the upgrade available for only, say, 12 months after a new version becomes available?
check out the current requirements for the SCPJ 1.4 upgrade exam There's no time limit listed. If you have ANY previous SCPJ certification (1.1, 1.2) you can take the upgrade exam. I can only assume the rules will be similar for a future SCWCD upgrade exam.
