Hi All!
When do i use '<realm-name>' tag ? or
Is this tag exclusively paired with '<auth-method>BASIC</auth-method>' ? .. meaning can i use '<realm-name>' tag regardless of the value of '<auth-method>' tag ?
Pls enlighten.. Thanks in advance

This is used with BASIC type of authentication.
This is basically used to identify the context of authentication i.e. on a server there can be more than one application using basic authentication. This helps the container the differentiate and identify about the context we are talking referring to.
Hope that helps

You can use <realm-name> name even though the <auth-method> is not BASIC. In that case, your declaration will be ignored.

If you don't supply the realm-name element - Tomcat at least seems to put in the "server name" for me this was localhost:8080, this is what showed in the basic authentication dialog box.
I'm not sure what or if there is a default realm-name - my quick Google search didn't find any answers.

Thanks to all!
I thought the container would produce some kind of exception if the <realm-name> was used inapproriately..
