secured web application

hi all,
is it possible to provide authentication check for the username and password values taken from the database..i mean, in the SCWCD exam kit it is described like we have to keep the username,password,role-name in the deployment descriptor ...so my doubt is how will u put this authentication check in a real time web application..can we make this role based checking for the database driven values ???

I think the authentication mechanism provided by Servlet container is not very flexible, and I guess industry strength authentication systems will use their own authentication system.This is my understanding, may be I could be wrong.
