I read that
The <servlet-name> element is mandatory, and the name should be unique across the deployment descriptor. [Deshmukh]

But, I wrote the following code to experiment with the "Welcome File List", and I was able to execute the web application.

How come I was able to execute this web application, without a <servlet-name> element in the deployment descriptor? Is <servlet-name> mandatory?

<servlet-name> is mandatory inside the <servlet> tag. Since <servlet> tag is optional in a <web-app>, your code is working fine.

I misunderstood. Thanks Paul for making it clear.
