Hey folks,
I finished my SCJP(1.4) thanks to this site and you folks that post on here. I'm actually surprised by how much the concentrated study time helped my coding (no jokes please ) However, I have a question that keeps coming up for me and am looking for some guidance.
I'd like to get SCWCD, SCBCD, and XSL certified this year, hopefully sooner than later. I just can't figure out the order to study and take the tests.
As far as my day-to-day work and previous skillsets, I did JSP/Servlet intensive work three years ago for two years, and I'm currently doing XSL and bean work in a custom framework (no tags or servlets really). I guess I have no J2EE experience to speak of.
So, I'd say that, the XSL or SCWCD certs would be low-hanging fruit for me; the J2ee test is something I expect would take longer.
Enter the real world. I'm working a contract 'til mid-march and really don't have time to learn SCBCD on the side. I have some IBM training dollars I can use (thank you layoff program) so I'm planning on taking a week in April and attending one of Sun's classes near my house.
What I wanted to do was take the WhizLabs evening class SCWCD evening class, then study for a week, then take the test. As you know, that would mean I'd be taking the older test.
I think to do the new SCWCD test, I'd need to wait 'til Kathy's book comes out, and the online study guides are updated. So, that means that one of my two "easy" tests is pushed out 'til later this year, like June or so.
I guess now that I've typed all this, I realize it boils down to, should I just go ahead and take the current SCWCD test now, or wait 'til the new one is out and study guides are available.
I feel like the process of studying and taking the test helped me, and I'd like to continue with another cert. So, should I
1) Go ahead and take the old SCWCD now, then April SCBCD, then XML later.
2) Take XML now, April SCBCD, new SCWCD later.
3) Something else (Maybe SCJD?) now, just wait on SCWCD
Any ideas/thoughts?
I can't imagine a prospective employer really rejecting me because I have the "old" SCWCD instead of the new one... not sure I'd want to work at such a place anyway.
Ok, enough rambling. Any suggestions out there in JavaLand?

Hi Bill,
Here are my 2 cents. If I were you, I would go ahead and take the current SCWCD as you are already familiar with JSP/Servlets. Next go for SCBCD and by that time the newer version of SCWCD will be out in the market. Then you can take it as you already wrote the old version. There are only minor changes between the two. Sevlets has'nt changed much, whereas JSP changed a lot. But as you worked already, it should'nt be tough for you. As far as I know I am not sure there is any XSL specific exam, but there are a couple of exams for XML. One is IBM exam in "XML and Related Technologies" and the other one is the new XML Master certification. So you can take this one after SCBCD or after the SCWCD newer version towards the end of year. That would give you four certifications in a year.
If you want to go for SCJD, that is a big work I think. you should put on lot of effort(as you are working), but is greatly valued. SCJD is best in between contracts so that you can concentrate and complete it fast.
And again, those are my 2c only. Thanks.
