EL Functions x Scripting Elements

I really don't get what is the big deal of EL funcions when comparing
to invoking methods directly.

For example, to call the sin() method of Math class, you can:

- Just use a JSP expression:


- Use it within an EL expression



(BUT you have to declare it in the example.tld):




So, I think using EL functions is too much work, and using scripting elements are a lot more easier. Am I wrong?
