There is always the Head First Design Patterns book, for the true O'Reilly-phile, but I a not sure much of it is relevant.

Hi Sanjay -

I'm concerned to hear that the HFS book isn't thought to cover enough information about patterns

Certainly the chapter on patterns is not a complete study of patterns in general, but the chapter is meant to cover the detail that's covered on the exam. If you have any info to the contrary we'd love to hear it - we'd like to make the book better!

(I have to say though that Bryan and Kathy and I were all on the team that created the exam, so I'd be surprised if the book missed something )

Hi
Bert Bates

Im highly surprised after your response to my query and happy too.Feel like to meet you also. But anyway as i believe in HFSJ so i will read that whatever is there. I did read in lots of post who had cleared exam said that Design Pattern is not enough that why i did ask about this.

Thank you Very much

Bert,

Your HF book is great. Hats off to you folks.
This is my take on your question on design patterns. Design patterns are covered well but we are unable to extrapolate them to different scenarios that come up in the exam and say this is the same pattern. For eg. MVC is a pattern so much talked about that most folks will not have trouble recognising it. But Business delegate , they may get confused. I would suggest that that same pattern and what it's used for may need to be put in different ways, basically say the same thing is many ways, by the end of which people will be able to recognise it.

I found from the Objectives that the foll. are covered in the exam:

1. Intercepting Filter
2. Model-View-Controller
3. Front Controller
4. Service Locator
5. Business Delegate
6. Transfer Object (Sometimes also called as Value Object).

All the above are supposed to be simple and easy patterns!
Moreover the net contains lots of good explanations of these patterns.
If you spend a few hours on the net, it would be sufficient.

I am not sure if DAO (Data Access Object Pattern) is covered in the exam.
Can somebody clarify that?

Vishwa
Data Access Object was covered in the exam, I do remember it seeing somwhere as a choice. Possibly in J2eeCertificate page.
If I am not mistaken it also has another name.

Even I have seen DAO pattern mentioned in the mock exams for the old exam, SCWCD1.3, but wasn't sure about the new exam SCWCD1.4.
It is not mentioned in the Objectives listed at the Sun's WebSite, So hopefully we shouldn't get any question in the actual exam.
