I just would like to share this info with my rancher friends.

The *.* is a valid url-pattern. However, it's meaning is not as expected. Here is what this pattern means:

It will be applied when the extension is * for eg. hello.* or asdf.* or *.* It will not be applied to *.doc or asdf.txt

I have tested this on tomcat-5.

Hi,

You are correct.
There are only three URL patterns that have special treatment while request matching.
1. /..../* used to path matching
2. *.ext - for exension mapping
3. / - for default servlet application.
All other are used exact matching only.

*.* is fit in 2nd case. that is extension mapping having extension *. ( * means literally * not wild card)

Thank
