Can't we use custom Cookies for session tracking?

You can create an application that uses custom cookies to, say, track if user logged in. Containers, though, use jsessionid reserved cookie for session tracking (ie maintain a state between two or more successive browser-server calls). By means of the session ID the container can find the specific HttpSession object of a client and store/retrieve session attributes in it.

Hi,

There are some containers, eg websphere v4.x (and 5.x I believe, but not certain), that do let you change the name of the cookie that stores the session id.

I don't know how many other containers let you do it.
