somewhat basic question
What is deployment and what happens in this process and what is the container role or involvement in this process?

As per my understanding Deployment is copieng servlet class files and all static pages used by servlet to directory on server, which container looks at by default.

Once web application is developed and packed as war file, it has to get ready in the server to handle the requests by the users. Deployment process may differ from container to container. If you take any typical container, it may perform the following things.
1) copying the war file into specific directory of the container, where it looks to start the web war file.
2) Validating the war file like it has META-INF folder, web.xml file etc...
3) Starting the war file with the server so that it can be ready to serve the requests. You might have declared to load some servlet on startup. So it creates instance of that servlet and initializes..etc.etc...
All these steps combinely called as deployment. Generally some small tools will be available to deploy these war/ear files, comes with the server itself.
Hope tihs clears you.
