I agree with you on this. It's easier and more convienent for me to read from my computer. Being able to cut and paste code makes it a lot easier to re create the examples. Every programming book should have a cd to go along with it. I voiced this on this forum last week.

Hi Guys,

We would love to offer a pdf version of the book, but we have yet to find a secure way to do so

We are VERY, VERY open to ideas about how to provide secure electronic copies of the book! Since the tech bubble burst five or six years ago, computer book sales have dropped about 85% !

That's a really serious problem because it is almost impossible to making a living as a technical book author these days. Kathy and I consider ourselves to be very fortunate to have had the success we've had with our books, and we'd like to keep creating them, but each book requires a huge time investment (maybe 1500 hours on average), and we simply can't afford to make that investment and then give copies away - it is a huge problem for us.

You should know that we always have a thread open on this problem, and again, we are very interested in hearing your ideas about how to accomplish this task securely!

Thanks,

Bert

Hii Bates,
Thanks for your reply, currently there are many softwares which can be installed on only one machine(U might know more than me).similarly u can also provide like that such that the book cd is installed on only one machine..then both of our problems can be solved...but u once think about this issue.

Thanks.....

Hi Bates,

It will be good if atleast source code of examples are included in the CD.
Also I should be easy create un-printable version of pdf files which will atleast prevent duplication of hard copies...

Thanks,
Raja.

Hi Bates,

May be you can use the model followed by Jboss at work book.If we buy this book then they give us a coupon which we can use to login and read this book online at http://safari.oreilly.com for approximately 40 days(i.e. SAFARI ENABLED).

Thanks

This does not prevent the copy of the file itself, which is what they are trying to prevent.

Sure, but would you want to take the time to scan/photocopy over 600 pages of material? Copying one file is quicker and so much easier which is why soft copies, not hard copies, are the concern.
