Hi, I recently passed SCJP exam. I develop in Java mostly JDBC, some swing and JNI. I am really interested in the web development (no experience)

I am tempted to skip SCJD and go straight to the SCWCD - All you experts, can I have your honest advice enabling me to decide. What is the industry point of view?

Thanks in advance.

It's not really about skipping SCJD - they are about different things, and one is not a pre-requisite for the other. Personally, I wanted both, and chose to do SCJD first.

If you have absolutely no experience of web-development, why not download tomcat and work through some examples to see what it's all about. That way you'll have a better idea of your own whether you are still interested. Both certifications will require plenty of hard-work, so if you're more interested in web-development, why not start working towards SCWCD and see how you go?

I agree with Daniel's assessment and I will eventually go for my SCJD, but it is low on my priority list (I went the alternate route). After I do my SCJP upgrade, i will probably do my SCJD then. Best of luck!

I think the important thing to understand is the difference between the exams. Both the SCWCD and the SCBCD are for J2EE technologies and are multiple choice (like the SCJP). With a good study guide and some practical experience you can gain these fairly quickly.

However the SCJD requires you to develop an actual application from business requirements, using J2SE technologies like Swing, RMI, IO and requires good understanding of Threads, Locking mechanisms, I found that it provides a really good learning experience, but takes a lot more time! You then also have to sit an exam.

I guess it depends on what route you want to take i.e J2SE or J2EE, personally having some web and EJB experience I went for the quick win route, by getting the SCWD and SCBCD multiple choice exams under my belt and then started the SCJD which I have found the most rewarding.

Jason.
