Hello ranchers!
I've been taking some of the SCWCD's mock exams, and it seems to me that the philosophy of this exam is different to that of the SCJP. The SCWCD is more about memorizing the specs, while the SCJP is about knowing the intimate and darkest secrets of the APIs. The SCJP is a way trickier exam... Am I correct?

I agree, SCJP 5.0 is tougher than SCWCD. If it's 1.4 then it is more of a walk in the garden

Yes, I also think that SCJP is trickier.
SCWCD is more straight-forward, but a lot of memorizing is needed, especially for someone with no experience in the field.

Hello Marx,

I was a key player in writing the objectives for both the SCWCD and the latest version of SCJP. The general philosophy of both exams is "nuts and bolts programming". SCJP is far more about language features, as it is intended to be. SCWCD is also about the language features of webapp development, especially around JSP syntax. Obviously, the servlet (and to some degree the tab library objectives) are mostly about the APIs but more importantly the objectives are about the lifecycle of servlet/JSP components and HTTP interactions (especially around sessions). We did our best to make the latest SCWCD about analyzing what-if types of questions where we pose a scenario, but these types of questions are really hard to write; especially given our very short (3 days) question writing workshop.

This "nuts and bolts programming" philosophy is very different than two other important Sun certifications: SCJD (Java Developer) and SCEA (Enterpirse Architect). These two exams are more in the philosophy of "design an application". This is far harder to create the exam and also to evaluate the assignments from exam candidates.

Just my 2 cents,
Bryan

Thanks for your remarks Bryan,
Even though the question writing workshop was short, you've got to make a very very nuts and bolts and very very hard exam (the SCJP).
In a couple of weeks I'll tell you about my experience with the SCWCD exam.

hey bryan,

all pepl, isnt it really nice to have one of the authors of the book replying to our queries . it give us a sens e of security about our preparation. isnt it ? it gives us a felling as if a TEACHER is there to answer his/her student's questions.
