Hi Friends,

I just gave my SCJP 1.5 last week and want to move ahead with my certification. I have got the SCWCD 1.4 voucher and want to give the exam in approx 1 month from now (may be 15th July 2006).

I have got a prior experience in JSP and Servlets and would solely want to study from certification point of view. Please could you suggest me from the below stated books, which one is appropriate for me to buy.

1. SCWCD Exam Study Kit:Java Web Component Developer Certification 2nd Edition Book & CD-ROM by Hanumant Deshmukh

2. Head First Servlets and JSP: Passing the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (SCWCD) by Bryan Basham, Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates

Thanks & Regards,
Dinesh Sundrani

I don't know about the other book, but Head First Servlets and JSP is really a wonderful book.

I highly recommend that. Someone would be able comment on the other book. All the best

The Head First Servlets and JSP is the right way to go. The SCWCD exam kit does not cover well all of the topics, some topics are just left out, or very lightly covered. It is not a bad book, in fact, it has a very useful last-minute study guide at the end of the book (again, some points are left out).
Starting from scratch (from not knowing anything about servlets/JSP) I read both in a couple of weeks and now I feel very confident about the exam (by the way, I'm taking it next monday).
The Head First book is actually a very soft and fast read, and it is written by the co-authors of the exam, so I wouldn't doubt in buying it. When I bought it, the delivery from USA to Venezuela costed me more than the book itself, but in the end I think it was completely worth the price.

head first series is good for those tryign to study jsp/servlets from scratch and also give the exam..
but if you are experienced with jsp/servlets and now details regardign it and custom tags and stuff..
then you will find head first jsp/servlet very frustrating as it has a unique approach for studying..

but if u already know the stuff..and wants to go for certification then scwcd is good...

i particularly found that reading hfjs..is good for the first time.
but after that you need something to the point..
may be u can use bullet notes...and other tutorial available online...

anyways my opinion would be to go to a library..study some chapters from both the books and go for your choice...

The Head First Book is really good.

I did read the first edition of the Deshmukh book which is a good book but tough to read, and it is outdated. The more relevant 2nd Edition book wasn't received so well by reviewers, as some complained that it didn't spend enough time on newer features like EL and Tag Files.
