Why can't the search engine find documents with key words that I know exist in some of my posts?
If I were Google, I wouldn't want to ruin my reputation with this thing.

What were you searching for? If there's a problem with the search engine, we'll take it up with the bosses. But first we have to make sure it isn't just PEBCAK (Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard) or some other problem we can work through ourselves

Perhaps it is naive of me to assume that just because the search engine here has the Google name attatched to it that it should yield similar results that has made Google the defacto standard. One would certainly assume that a search for non-trivial words such as ServerEventService would easily yield any post or reply that might contain that word. Whereas the use of Google via google.com has rarely failed me, conversely the search engine here has never returned the document that I was searching for despite the fact that I knew that such document existed.
It could be that I suffer from PEBCAK, but that is preferable to suffering from a lack of tact. Maybe moderators should be required to attend a seminar on diplomacy before becoming moderators. That might possibly cause them to refrain from responding to us peons with implied insults. I owe JavaRanch a debt for a great deal of help from this forum and am devoting a good deal of my time to give aspiring candidates the same help that I received, even to the point of taking work home so that I can repay my debt. On the other hand, this is the first time I have seen your moniker on a post on this forum of which you are a moderator. The other moderator, Mark has multiple daily posts, continuing to give of himself as he has as long as I have been a member of JavaRanch. It would seem some of us take our obligations more seriously than others. I don't have to continue to help and certainly won't if I am to be replied to in the pejorative by bartenders.

I second that as well. Ever since the change to the Google search engine it hasnt been the same. Not to mention when you click on the link it doesnt change to a different color to let you know that youve already clicked on it.

I'm also not so happy with Google for searching JavaRanch (outside JavaRanch Google is my favourite search engine). What I really miss is the ability to search the "Developer Certification" posts only.

I hope I do not see you go Michael... even though I am finished with my scjda, I still enjoy learning from your posts (and try to contribute when I can). Maybe if Junilu had been around the past few months since you completed your project and would have read the literally 100's (more like 500-600) intelligent and helpful posts that you have made (in such a short timeframe), he would have thought a little more before posting as he did. I am not trying to start up a big fight here, but as someone that has been learning a lot from Michael, I just wanted to give my thoughts in his defense.

I agree that the old way of searching was easier to find exactly what you were looking for.
However, I am able to find the exact same results through Google.
Bu tthe main reason for the switch was that the UBB search enginge was shutting down the server, so if we kept it, then there wouldn't even be a Javaranch to get too.
I think when we finnaly go to Jive as our Forum software, you will be please with their searching capabilities.
In the meantime, I sympathize with you and jsut ask to please be patient.
Thanks
Mark

As far as the comments about google, the fact is we are using google's search. If there is a problem then it is at google's end. We have noticed that google does not do a good job of indexing our pages.
All these problems go away when we switch to jive. Of course, jive uses the lucene search engine so we will have all new problems.

If you go to google and search under
ServerEventService site:saloon.javaranch.com, you'll get exactly the same result. Apparently Google hasn't indexed the pages that include that term (although it has indexed at least 13,800 pages in JavaRanch).

Michael,
I'm sorry that you took the PEBCAK phrase personally. I did not intend it to be offensive, thus the winking smiley; I often use it to describe my own "doh!" moments (I can even accept it if you say that in this case it was PEBCAK on my end).
Please don't let this stop you from contributing to the forums. It's true that I have not been around as much as I probably should but my current situation does not allow me to spend as much time on the ranch as I would like. Also, I am working on the Developer assignment myself so I really have more questions than answers right now. As I have told Mark before, I'll just stay in the sidelines for now and try "wipe up any spots on the bar" that he happens to miss.
Regards,

Hi Junilu,
Please forgive me for misunderstanding your meaning. I can sometimes be overly proud and interpret things wrongly (as my very wise wife points out from time to time). Any prejudicial (and obviously wrong) first impression that I may have interpreted in your first reply has certainly been aleviated by this response.
I wish you all the great enjoyment I had in completing the Develepor's certification. It was one of the most fulfilling things that I have ever done. So good luck and don't hesitate to ask for my opinion when you run into all those ambiguos requirements. I promise to be nice and not flame you again.
