Hi Charles,

For a person who has worked using normal J2EE architecture (including JSP/Servlets) for couple of years and has moderate exposure to UML, what will be recommended/avg preparation time to appear for SCWCD exam?

Or in other words, how many hours of study will be required for a typical J2EE guy to finish your book end to end?

Thanks,
Amit

If you're experienced already (especially in the practical side which is often neglected), you could probably work through each chapter and do the questions in an average of 45 minutes - this assumes you skip through some of the more elementary explanations in Part II, like servlets, filters and sessions. Overall, for all 19 exam chapters, you'd probably be looking at about 20 hours of study time. But the entire point about the chapter structure (and the reason there are so many chapters) is that each can be tackled in a small but worthwhile chunk - so for example, by the time you've finished chapter 7 you'll be confident with filters, at the end of the chapter 12 you'll know the expression language etc. The short chapters (averaging at approx. 25 pages) allow you to fit in the studying with a daytime job - for example, to do one or two chapters an evening while still feeling that you've accomplished something. The key to studying for the exam is to take one objective at a time, study it well and become confident with it... then move on to the next topic. The most awkward books to deal with are those with very few but really long chapters - I always have to put those kinds of book down halfway through a chapter and then remember everything I just read next time I pick it up... very annoying!
