What are the differences between the Developer and Web Component Developer exams? Is that correct to say that in order to take the SCWCD test, one needs to pass the SCJP exam? Thanks.

The SCJD (developer) exam is focused on building a practical project with Java SE. SCWCD is about Java EE (was J2EE in the old name) to build Web applications, and there is no practical element (just a multiple-choice exam). You are correct: you must pass the SCJP exam first, before taking either the SCJD or SCWCD (but you can take only one or both, in either order).
