Notes on Win32 (XP/Pro SP2, AMD64, 1.5G):

-The Win32 one-click installer on rubyforge does not seem quite right yet. so ......
-I made a copy of my 1.8.1 install directory for safe keeping
-Got the 1.8.2 Win32 zip
-Unzipped it into the 1.8.1 install directories (overwrite all)
-Started running some tests. 'irb', which I use a lot, moans about 'readline.dll' is missing, but functions.
-Get required 'readline.dll' etc. from
here and unzip all into the Ruby install directory, and that cures irb's complaints
-Further (minimal) testing appears OK, although some 'deprecation warnings' are issued for newly deprecated functionality (e.g. Eclipse's rdt plugin, which is useless under Windows in any case)

Next step: A Linux build on a Fedora box (no RPMs yet ......).

HTH any Ruby enthusiasts.

Regards, Guy

---------------

And a short time later .... on Fedora Core 3 ...

-rpm --erase the existing 1.8.1 installation
-ripped 'gem' and 'rails' out by (rm -rf ....)
-then the ./configure, make, make test, make install dance is flawless
-Initial tests look good.
-Reinstall 'gem', then 'rails'
-Looks very good to me at this point.

Guy

-------------------------------------------

And even later yet. My comment above about the one-click installer at Rubyforge is incorrect. My D/L was bad, missing a couple of MB, dunno what went wrong with that. I later:

-Reran the D/L and got the whole .exe this time
-Installed on (another) XP system, also SP2, no installation problems (don't laugh, PII 450, 384M, an ancient and hacked on triple boot system)
-Minimal testing is OK.

For most Win users, this is the way to go.
