Hi! I'm a greenhorn-just-turned-ranchhand. JavaRanch seems to be a very good place to be. I'm now almost addicted to it. I have a suggestion for the ranch hand status. I think currently anybody who has made 30 post becomes a ranch-hand. Why shall not we change that to anybody who has made 30 replies? Am i making sense? BTW, what is the crieria for other posts like Sheriff, Bartender regards Sudharsan
Look at the bottom of the forum pages. You will see a note "powered by InfoPop". They are the vendor for the UBB forum software that we are currently using. If you want an enhancement to the software, put in a request to them at their forum. However you should be aware that we are in the middle of attempting to replace the current UBB software with the Jive software from the Jakarta project. It is not going as well as we thought that it would, but might really happen one of these days.
I've made lots and lots of replies, but I'm pretty sure I haven't created 30 new posts (discussion threads). Are you sure replies don't count in the 30?
Are you sure replies don't count in the 30? They do. (Along with new posts.) Perhaps Sudharsan was suggesting that we modify the system to count only replies, not new posts? (Maybe to encourage people to answer questions too, not just post them?) I'm not sure it this would really matter much in any event.
yeah! Jim was right. I suggested conferring the ranchhand status for ppl who have made 30 replies. Actually this idea stemmed from my guiltiness of becoming a ranch hand by asking more questions and fewer replies.
Actually this idea stemmed from my guiltiness of becoming a ranch hand by asking more questions and fewer replies. Don't ever feel guilty about asking questions. A well-phrased and intelligent question can help many more people than a clumsy or ill-informed answer. I'm sure you've seen questions here which have made you think, and maybe even ones which have sent you looking for an answer. I know I have! [ September 20, 2002: Message edited by: Frank Carver ]
oh! I think we people are at two different sides. I'm on the asking side and you are at the answering side. So, our views also differ. Yeah! I have some of my questions are left unanswered. But i never wanted to post a question that is so intelligent to be answered. I just felt that 'Ranch Hand' can be a little more prestigious post. ;-)
