Guys,

Why is that the order of subelements in the <security-constraint>, <login-config> and <security-role> matters?? Any reason?

The order of subelements does not matter. The qn. in Bridgewater's book is incorrect.

I am using Tomcat 6.0. as per which it does not matter.

You can always check the web.xml's DTD / XSD according the servlet version you are using.

Which version of servlet are you using ?
