What is called optional authentication type?

Hi Ranchers,

Is there something called optional authentication type for J2EE 1.4
web server? And at the same place I got HTTP Digest is is optional.

yes, I come across that,

"Containers may optionally implement Digest authentication".

Anybody any additional information useful please post.

do we need to look into that for certfication?

Hi Srinivasan,

I don't get much useful information on the specification regarding that.
Perhaps we need not to bother much about that. (Not mentioned in spec).
But curiosity caused me to post this question.

But if I am not wrong it's not only about container

It's all about browsers.
Actually all browsers provides default support for HTTP BASIC.

They don't provide it for HTTP DIGEST.
And that's optional.
I think it is supported only by Microsoft IE5 and above.
Most of the browsers doesn't support it as encryption mechanism is not widely used.
Hence why J2EE container aren't required to support it. Also specification doesn't mandate it.
