I'm up to about page 400 of HFSJ. I want to take the 1.4 exam. I don't want to have to start over studying for a different exam. Besides trying to finish the book, what are the most important things I can do to get a passing score, given that I have to take the exam by April 30, and have a limited amount of time to study? Thanks.

I would suggest you better appear for version 5 and not 1.4,
there are no major changes and you can just read through the new things in 1-2 days,

if you appear for 1.4 now, you will have to upgrade yourself in sometime.

Two things:
1. In my context, no, I don't expect to have to do the exam for 5 any time soon. 1.4 will do just fine for some time.
2. Bert has made it clear, I think, that the questions are going to change (he implied they will be easier). So the "Coffee Cram"s and the mock exams available wont' be relevant specifically to what the new exam has.

So I still plan on doing the 1.4 exam, for which I've been prepping for some time. THanks.

Bert said that there are new questions, but that the new questions are NOT on new topics. They merely removed some unclear questions and replaced them with clearer ones on the same topics.

All 1.4 material is completely relevant to the 5.0 exam.

No new topics but different questions (potentially in kind, though not content) means that the materials available to me now, like mock exams, are the best prep for the current exam, not for the future one. All that you are saying is that the knowledge required is essentially the same. I don't see why it's a big deal for me to want to take the exam I have materials to prepare for. I'm taking the 1.4 exam. Does anyone have suggestions, beyond working through HFSJ, for success? Thanks.

I have some particularly fine hand crafted material that may be of interest to you. I feel confident that employers will not make a distinction between the 1.4 and 1.5 exam. In fact many employers find it hard to distinguish between Java and JavaScript
